Marina Silverio, RHN (Registered Holistic Nutritionist)
I decided to take a huge leap of faith by going back to school after 30 years and embarking on a new career as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. I’m grateful to all the support I received along the way from my husband, family, teachers, and mentors, they were my beacons of light and the wind beneath my wings; I will forever be grateful.
I have successfully overcome many adversities and health issues in my life; as a child I was malnourished and had digestive problems that stayed with me and got exponentially worse throughout my life, then I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in my teens; In my 30’s I was diagnosed with GRAVES (thyroid disease) and osteoporosis, I was also diagnosed with breast cancer that spread to my lymph nodes; 10 years later the cancer came back a second time. In addition, there were conditions that I developed from the side effects of treatments, ten surgeries, and numerous medications. My digestive issues had gotten very severe and I was later diagnosed with celiac disease, leaky gut, and list goes on. At one point I was on 25 pharmaceutical pills per day for numerous conditions and I was only 43 years old!!
I couldn’t accept that there was so much wrong with me and that all those issues were in isolation from each other; I was tired of having test after test and no real answers, I was tired of feeling exhausted and being in pain everyday that just kept getting worse with time. I made it my mission to find the answers. I focussed my energy and intention on educating myself about nutrition, lifestyle, and evolving emotionally and spiritually because, as I discovered, these are all contributing factors to illness and health. I made some drastic changes and continued my research for years. Over time I became stronger and healthier; this was so foreign to me that for the first time, I truly realized how sick I really was because feeling poorly all the time was all I knew and until then, I had nothing to compare it to.
Today I’m no longer on any pharmaceutical medication. I was able to improve my health to the point where I no longer needed any medication. Every individual has different biochemical needs and the journey to health is a process unique to everyone of us; this takes us to the next part of my story.
I thought I reached a pretty good place in my life, when I serendipitously came across the opportunity to become a Holistic Nutritionist; I didn’t even know what a Holistic Nutritionist does and it was the farthest thing from my mind to go back to school after so many years! I started to research the profession and I experienced the most profound feeling that this is what I have to do. I worried about being too old to go back to school, I worried about not being able to work full time while studying, I worried about my memory, which was effected by the chemotherapy and other factors, but all those obstacles paled in comparison to the feeling of certainty that becoming a practitioner and helping others is the path I need to follow.
My education was a vital part of my journey towards health, and an amazing eye opener that offered me a greater and deeper understanding of the causes that contributed to my poor health and how to repair my body and increase vitality. It gave me the necessary foundation to be able to discern from the sea of vast information that is readily available and very confusing and contradictory. This was a holistic and science based program that included the study of anatomy and physiology, cellular biology, pathology, chemistry and biochemistry, a unique and complete perspective on nutrition as well as energy medicine and the psychological and spiritual connection to health. I learned how to repair my intestinal tract to eventually enable me to reintroduce foods back into my diet without any adverse reactions. Not only did I learn to heal physically, but I also learned to heal and evolve emotionally and spiritually; ultimately, I learned how to help others do the same.
My passion and commitment allowed me to graduate from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition with honors and distinction. I’m also a member in good standing of the Canadian Association of Holistic Nutrition Professionals (CAHN-Pro), and the CSNN alumni association. I’m currently a practitioner and have a private practice in Toronto. I’ve Successfully filled roles of a teacher, speaker, and writer, I’ve had numerous articles published including one on Breast Cancer prevention published in Vitality magazine; I also write regularly for “Living Well Naturally” (see article on stress on page 16 of the magazine). For more visit the “Articles” page on the menu above.
My personal experience combined with my education enables me to help others by using solid knowledge and strong intuition. My road towards optimal health was long and arduous, but now I have the road map to help direct others. Maybe some of my story resonates with you, or you may just want to prevent disease, whatever steps you wish to take towards optimal health, I would be happy to facilitate your journey and provide you with the knowledge you need to empower you to take charge of your health. To your health and the health of our planet.
